W8 Walkman Android phone announced

Sony Ericsson has just announced its first phone from the Walkman series to run Android. Just like its brother, the X8, the Sony Ericsson W8 sports a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a 3.2MP camera. Under the hood there's a 600MHz single-core processor ticking, with 168MB of RAM.
The W8 will run Android 2.1, which is a bit unfortunate, as most Droids on the market are now running Froyo or even Gingerbread. Nevertheless, this is the first Walkman phone to run the Google mobile OS, which will be covered by the Timescape UI. It will be bundled with the MH 410.
It will be available in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam starting from Q2 2011 in a choice of colors - Azure Blue, Metallic Red, and Iconic Orange

Yendo, Cedar and Xperia X8 announced

The Yendo is a standard feature phone with a non-smartphone operating system, but it seems that Sony Ericsson has finally optimized the user interface for finger usage. It's the much awaited touchscreen walkman device.

There’s a 2.6 inch capacitive touch display with 240 x 320 pixels resolution. Being a Walkman phone, there’s naturally a 3.5 millimetre audio jack connector. Other features include a micro USB connector, social networking apps preloaded and ten different colours at launch.

Sony Ericsson expanded their eco-friendly Greenheart family with “Cedar”, a candybar feature phone. Cedar features built-in widgets for Facebook, Twitter and Myspace for those of us who would like to be connected on the move. Like all recent Sony Ericsson phones, the Cedar supports memory expansion via MicroSD and a microUSB port. It also sports a 3.5 mm audio jack and Exchange Activesync.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8, previously known as “Shakira”, was announced today. It sports a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen, 16.7 million color display that sports a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. A 3.2 megapixel camera,  FM radio , Wi-Fi and GPS are onboard too. And the price? Just 200 Euros!!

Sony Ericsson W150 leaked!

Remember the Android powered walkman rumor? Well, there's a slight twist to that.

According to GsmArena, the Sony Ericsson W150 is an entry level touch model, a first for Sony Ericsson. It doesn't have 3G connectivity or Wi-Fi and it's only got dual-band GSM/EDGE support. There's a 2 megapixel camera on the back. Contrary to what it seemed earlier, the device doesn't run on Android but sports some other type of touch UI.

Although from the screenshots, it is pretty evident that Sony Ericsson kept its promise of making the Nexus UI available across all platforms.

Android 2.1 powered Walkman coming?

Rumor has it that Sony Ericsson will soon announce a new Walkman device. The device will look familiar to the Vivaz, will sport a touchscreen and will be powered by Android 2.1. No details on further specifications except that the device will also have 16GB flash memory in-built.

Digging deeper into this rumor, it seems that Sony Ericsson will release the touchscreen Walkman phone later on this year, by June to be more precise.

An Android 2.1 powered touchscreen Walkman phone!  Let's hope Sony Ericsson announce and launch this one pretty quick.

Note: The above image is a concept.

Spiro and Zylo reboot Walkman series

Well, here's the answer to the one question which you all have been asking. The Walkman series is far from dead, in fact with two new phones that were just announced it's as alive as ever.

Sony Ericsson today announced the Spiro and Zylo,
next generation of Walkman phones which offer an affordable entry point into Sony Ericsson’s Communication Entertainment portfolio.

Both new Walkman models offer Twitter and Facebook applications as well as the state of the art Walkman Player. Sony Ericsson has kept its promise of bringing the UX UI to other platforms and both the handsets sport the UX platform interface. ( as seen below)

The Sony Ericsson Spiro (above images) is a compact slider at 92 x 48 x 16.75 mm and weighs 90 grams. It's a dual-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone with a 2.2" QVGA TFT screen and a 2MP camera. It has a memory card slot for microSD cards up to 16GB,an FM Radio, a 3.5mm audio jack and a microUSB port. It supports the two most popular audio codecs - MP3 and AAC.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo has more advanced features. It sports 2.6-inch scratch-resistant screen with QVGA resolution. The 3.2-megapixel camera offers geographical tagging possibility, despite the fact that the phone lacks GPS.

There's a microSD card slot for cards up to 16GB for your music collection and the music player supports MP3, AAC . Also, the interesting thing about this device is that it provides support for FLAC format, which offers much higher sound quality than MP3. You should be able to tell the difference, since Zylo is coming along with a pair of the best Sony Ericsson headphones - the motion-controlled MH907. Besides, the phone will have Bluetooth, 3D games and will have the ability to imitate the noise of a busy street to help you avoid unpleasant conversations. However, in typical Sony Ericsson manner, for the sake of product differentiation,  this Zylo does not have a 3.5 mm jack like its brother.

The Sony Ericsson Zylo will be available in the third quarter of 2010 in select markets in Black jazz, Silver Cha-Cha and Pink swing. The Sony Ericsson Spiro will come out in Q3 of 2010 too and it will be available in Black contrast, Pink sunset, Green spring and Black stealth colors.

Sony Ericsson Touchscreen Smartphone coming in H2

Now that the euphoria about the 'Fab 5' ie..the X10, Vivaz, Vivaz Pro, X10 mini, X10 mini Pro, is over, it was about time we got some info about the next batch of handsets right? ;)

Well, in a news article regarding Sony Ericsson's Taiwan partners, it's been revealed that Sony Ericsson is expected to release orders for two ODM handsets to Arima Communications in 2010, with shipments of one Walkman handset to begin at the end of the second quarter and the other, a touch-enabled model, in the second half of the year.

The article further goes on to say that orders for feature phones released by Sony Ericsson to Taiwan production partners will be reduced significantly in 2010 as the handset vendor is switching its focus on smartphones.

While the news that Walkman is back in the picture isn't new, most of us will be hoping that the touch enabled device is the rumored Playstation Phone.

I'll keep you posted as and when further details are out. For the time being, you can hit the link below to read the entire article.

New Walkman phones this year

At the time of launch of the Entertainment Unlimited series, everyone had just one question on their minds. Will the launch of the new convergent lineup bring upon the death of  the Walkman and Cybershot brand? Both the sub brands reassured their patrons that they were buying devices with stellar music and imaging capabilites respectively. Well, Sony Ericsson has finally broken its silence on the issue.

In an interview with Mobile Today, Sony Ericsson’s Nathan Vautier, Head of Sales in the UK, said that the company will announce 14-16 phones this year, including “a number of Walkman phones” for the lower-/mid-end segment. Most will be priced around the £100 mark.

Sony Ericsson W995 hands-on

The folks at Engadget have just posted their first impressions about the Sony Ericsson W995. Here's what they had to say:

The sound through the 3.5mm jack was simply stellar, perhaps thanks in part to the phone's Clear Stereo and Clear Bass gizmos for improving stereo separation and a great kick in the pants on the low end. Granted, we conducted our testing on a pair of exquisite Shure SE530 buds equipped triple-flange sleeves, but we use these on virtually every music phone we test -- and we can say without hesitation that the W995a provides the best sound we've ever heard from a phone. Sound was rich and well-balanced, but perhaps more importantly, there was virtually zero hiss or other unwanted electronic interference. In fact, we'd go so far to say it's among the best sound we've heard from any portable media player.

Enhancing the phone's multimedia-centric image are stereo speakers that are creatively positioned at either end, top and bottom. Stereo speakers in a device this small are gimmicky by nature, but Sony Ericsson's done the best it could by separating the two by as much distance as they could possibly be -- and they're clear enough to rival some notebook PCs.

Today, the first phone to be announced by Sony Ericsson was the Yari, the ultimate phone for mobile fun, whether it’s gaming you’re after or multimedia action. The Yari is the first phone to feature the Walkman v4 player, which introduces interchangable themes.

“Yari is the industry’s first mobile phone with gesture gaming outside of the Japanese market,” said Catherine Cherry, Market Business Manager at Sony Ericsson. “It’s time to move like you’ve never moved on a mobile phone before! With Gesture gaming you move your body to play instead of pressing buttons on the phone, giving you a fun experience that even helps you keep fit. If you’ve exhausted yourself with the games there are loads of other multimedia features to enjoy. Snap your friends with the five megapixel camera or chill out to your favourite tunes with the state-of-the art music player”.

The Sony Ericsson Yari has a 2.4" 262K color QVGA display and a decently sounding 5 megapixel autofocus camera.
It’ll also have a flash and feature geo-tagging, smile shutter, photo fix and face recognition. It also has a built-in GPS receiver and an accelerometer that allows automatic screen rotation.

Key features include:
  • Gesture and motion gaming for action on and off the screen
  • A/B buttons – gaming shortcut keys
  • Gaming carousel gives direct access to your games from the desktop
  • State-of-the art music player and stereo speakers for easy listening
  • Music call - one button press to share your favourite tracks while you talk
  • 5.0 mega pixel camera – easily upload images to your web album
  • Send your location by SMS

Sony Ericsson Yari network connectivity is duly covered with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support and dual band UMTS (with HSDPA).

The other interesting features of the Sony Ericsson Yari include Bluetooth, FM Radio with RDS and USB support. It will also have a microSD card slot for expanding the 60 MB of built-in memory.

Sony Ericsson Yari is set to launch in September in Achromatic Black and Cranberry White color versions.

GsmArena has already posted a preview of this attractive slider. Here's what they had to say about Yari.

So there you have it - while the Sony Ericsson Yari isn't a revolutionary device, Sony Ericsson have just successfully revolutionized their portfolio. You've got a top-notch music player, high-res camera with Face and Smile detection, GPS receiver, a praise-worthy web browser and the latest in Sony Ericsson UI development all in one device. Not to mention the extraordinary gesture-based gaming. The newly adopted and much welcomed transition to microSD cards support is also something to cheer about.

Walkman and Cybershot to stay

Sony Ericsson denies it will remove the popular ranges from its handset portfolio but says it will now aim them at prepay users

Sony Ericsson has hit out at press reports saying it would drop its Walkman and Cybershot handset brands in favour of the “entertainment unlimited” concept headed up by the ‘Idou’, which features a 12MP camera.

It denied that it would discontinue the popular ranges after a report titled “Sony Ericsson axes Walkman mobiles” appeared on Marketing Magazine’s website this week.

It said, however, that future Walkman and Cybershot devices would be aimed at prepay users, as “entertainment unlimited” would become the manufacturer’s flagship handsets.

A Sony Ericsson spokesperson confirmed: “We do not plan to drop Walkman and Cybershot branded devices from our portfolio in the UK.

“At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February we announced our intention to combine the best of experiences from Walkman and Cybershot into more entertainment focused handsets. The first of these is a handset announced as Idou.

“By taking the very best elements of our Walkman and Cybershot devices we will deliver, new 'high' end devices into the market. This will mean that both Cybershot and Walkman branded devices will become more of a prepay proposition within the UK market. This is a very important part of the market for us to address and we are very confident Walkman and Cybershot devices will have strong appeal to UK consumers in the prepay segment.”

Apparently, the site lets you create style-up covers for your W508 and naturally buy the finished product afterwards. So even if you don’t own a W508, it’s worth it to take part.

Sony Ericsson W508 Review

Mobile-Review has just reviewed the Sony Ericsson W508. The W508 is just another usual SE handset, with no frills whatsoever. The folks at MR had something similar to say:

The Sony Ericsson W508 doesn’t bring anything new to the table with its moderately strong vibro alert, a bit too loud ring tones and decent call quality. The phone is set to arrive some time in April at the price point of 250 Euro, which may seem like a bargain until you take the Sony Ericsson W910 (220 Euro) and W595 (220 Euro) into consideration. While the W508 will retail for 30 Euro more, it doesn’t offer any significant upgrades compared to the abovementioned models. With its slightly revamped A200 platform and bog-standard specifications, it will never make it out of its pretty narrow niche, thus repeating the fate of the Sony Ericsson W980. Its target audience will definitely see it as a nearly perfect phone, but much like the case of the W980, there won’t be many people with this mindset and demands.

Sony Ericsson announce the S312 and W205

Sony Ericsson anounces the successor of well-know S302 Snapshot™ - the new S312. The S312 is a low-end phone,featuring a 2.0″ 176×220 pixels TFT screen, 2.0-Megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom, PlayNow™, TrackID™.

A LED flash is on the back to assist low-light shooting, which much like Cyber-shots, four illuminated photo shortcuts on the keyboard come to life once you start the camera.

The Sony Ericsson S312 will be available in selected markets from Q2 in the colors Dawn Blue and Honey Silver.

The Sony Ericsson W205 is an affordable Walkman offering that has a 1.3 megapixel camera with video recording, a Walkman music player with Album Art and a 1.8-inch 65K color display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels.

The memory on the Sony Ericsson W205 is expandable via the M2 memory card slot so you can fit in quite a number of music tracks. Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) and FM radio with RDS add to the music-centric features.

It's also the first Sony Ericsson handset to ship with the excellent Opera Mini web browser, which has been preinstalled on most Nokia feature phones. It also offers a multi-person phonebook so that users from emerging markets can share the handset with their family but keep their contacts private.

Sony Ericsson W205 will be available in selected markets from Q3 2009 in Ambient Black.

Also announced today is the MS410 Snap-on speaker. It supports all Walkman phones.

Also announced today is the VH300 - a small and simple Bluetooth headset.
