Mini-Interview with Zed@Cellphonesoft

Cellphonesoft is one of the primary developers of the now dead UIQ platform. They have released quite a few unique applications like Bootman, Tweak Peaks and Swiss Manager Elite. Since I got many queries from you all regarding a recent post of mine, I decided on a set of questions and forwarded them to none other than Zoltan Gyorgypal ( or 'Zed' as you all know him) of Cellphonesoft. Here's what he has to say, and UIQ3 users - you needn't fear, atleast not as of now. There still might be some good news amidst all the gloom. :) Read On!

1) Can we expect a swiss manager elite upgrade?

Swiss Manager Elite 2.10 is pretty much the culmination of its product line for UIQ. There are no known issues in 2.10, no problems reported by users, so a bug-fix upgrade does not seem to be necessary. Some new features, like RAR support, or file search, could be included in a later upgrade, provided new registrations suggest that people still actively use UIQ phones, and they need this application.

Let me mention that Sony Ericsson's latest Symbian phone, the Satio, will not remain "naked" for long without Swiss Manager - SMP 3.00 for S60 phones will be released within the next couple of days.

2) Can we expect something on the lines of Speedy Go! for newer UIQ3 phones?

A similar product exists for UIQ, called Tweak Peaks. The two applications use very similar methods for phone acceleration. Tweak Peaks does not contain the speed testing feature of Speedy Go!, and this could be included, if a new version of Tweak Peaks is released in the future. However, at the moment we have no solid plans about that.

3) Is there any scope for new UIQ3 apps from Cellphonesoft?

Like in the case of upgrades to existing products, the development and release of new UIQ3 applications strongly depend on the activity of users. We can measure activity by sales.

Our most recent new project for UIQ3 was a profile manager, which however was cancelled well before completion. The major reason for that decision was that our previous new application, Padissimo, failed to generate a proper amount of sales, while it was downloaded by thousands from cracker sites.

The prevalence of piracy indeed kills development for a platform which is already weakened by other conditions. Users need to decide what they ultimately want, and do not expect developers to work for nothing.

Cheers, Zoltan

Well, that pretty much sums it up. I sincerely recommend existing UIQ3 users to try out Swiss Manager Elite which is indeed a powerful app for the Elite group of  users who continue to use what is arguably the most advanced mobile GUI on the planet.

It will indeed be unfortunate if future upgrades/new apps fail to get released due to rampant piracy. However the good news is that there has been unusual respect towards CPS apps from the cracker community recently and its latest product, Swiss Manager Elite remains uncracked, which really bodes well for any future development as well as for the platform as a whole.

This bit of news does go a long way in making us optimistic about future apps that Zed mentioned above, as well as in the recent past. Some of them are a Profile ManagerTweak Peaks 2.00 and a universal macro recorder/player. Lets hope that these apps see the light of the day!
