At the MWC this year, Sony Ericsson shrank their announcements to only a couple of handsets, but it was clear that Sony Ericsson had stolen the show. Although there won't be a XPERIA X2 this year, but as Sony Ericsson's Head of marketing Lennard Hoornik shared, there will be a next XPERIA, but only when they find the right product.
First up is the new Walkman flagship model, the W995, previously known as the 'Hikaru'. The new device will sport a lot of high-end features in order to offer the ultimate in multimedia experience.
The W995 will have a 2.6-inch QVGA scratch-resistant TFT screen, supporting up to 262k colors. The phone will be equipped with an 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, which is impressive, having in mind that this would be more of a music-oriented phone. In addition, “standard” features like Wi-Fi and aGPS are also included. Out of the box, the new Walkman will come with an 8GB M2 memory card, in order to extend the 118 MB built-in memory. The music-dedicated control keys will be on the right side of the phone, and the 3.5mm jack will be on the top. Other unique features include a PlayStation 3 compatibility, which means that you will be able to share media from the W995 to your PS3 over Wi-Fi and thus easily get it played on your TV.
Also included will be a FM Radio with RDS, chat view messaging, a nice Facebook application and a Flickr application. The W995 also comes with a rather cool application that can change the sound of your voice.
The box will include the pair of HPM-77 headphones. These will be replaced by the noise-cancelling HPM-88 headphones in selected regions.
- The W995 Walkman phone brings together the very best music experiences of any phone, augments this with best in class video and sharing capabilities to offer the most complete communication entertainment package to date,” said Alexandre Cardon, Global Marketing Business Manager at Sony Ericsson in a press release.
- This powerful mobile phone delivers the best possible video resolution that can fit in your pocket and with enough battery stamina to watch two full length feature films. The W995 also comes complete with the award winning clear audio experience and an 8.1 megapixel camera for the highest quality picture and sound available in a mobile phone.
There’s also a built-in You Tube Player in the Media menu for streaming videos off the popular video sharing site. Just set the phone on its built-in stand and watch the videos in full screen and with sound from the stereo speakers on the back.
An accelerometer is also included in the phone, which enables menu and browser rotation, in addition to motion gaming and the use of the WalkMate application.
The W995 will come in three color solutions: Progressive Black, Cosmic Silver and Energetic Red, aiming to satisfy all tastes. We will be able to enjoy this one in select markets from Q2 2009, available in two versions: one for the European/Asian markets with a dual-band 3G (900/2100 MHz) support and another for the U.S market, coming with a tri-band 3G (850/1900/2100 MHz).
MediaGo
The Sony Ericsson W995 will be the first phone to support the new Sony Ericsson MediaGo multimedia management sync service that should allow for seamless transfer of data between Sony Ericsson phones and a computer over USB cable. The key feature of the service is that it will transcode all data on-the-go so that it can run on the mobile phone.
MediaGo will also allow automatic syncing of multimedia files such as updating of the music library, transferring of newly downloaded podcast episodes, etc.
MediaGo will launch with Sony Ericsson W995 and will be available in 15 languages. Sony Ericsson also announced that they are planning of hitting the video playback from various angles by not only focusing W995 on video, but by providing unlimited movies downloads via the PlayNow Arena Movies service, which would require a monthly subscription.
